When the first settler arrived in 1842, the area was already called Honey Grove because
of the honey found in a grove of trees just west of the town square. In 1848 the town was
laid out and building lots were sold. Today, Honey Grove is a town of some 1,800 people.
Economically, the town is primarily supported by extensive farming and ranching operations in
the surrounding area. Residents are primarily 3rd and 4th generation Texans who have a
strong affinity to the land, the people, and the town.
Although the nearest shopping and medical center is located in Bonham, Texas, some 18 miles
to the west, Honey Grove has a good number of retail stores, restaraunts, and repair shops and services that
will meet most needs. In addition there is a medical clinc in the town, served by a nurse practicioner
as well as a practicing dentist, and a pharmacy. The Honey Grove Independent School District has an
elementry school, middle, and high school. Two of the three schools were recently constructed. The town has
a public library, 10 churches, 2 parks, a civic center, and a 9 hole golf course. Several good fishing / boating
lakes are close by. The Weekly Gazette is the town's newspaper and high-speed internet service is available.
